Gift of Adult Wheelchair Tricycles in India

Not only does Hopkins Rotary benefit our local community, but we're always working on international projects.  One recent project brought 350 tricycles to disabled adults in India.

Hopkins Rotary, working with 59 other Rotary Clubs in Minnesota, has supported a project in Southern India to provide mobility to victims of polio or other diseases or accidents that are unable to walk.

“We are pleased to be a part of this large effort. The project this year will provide 350 Adult Wheelchair Tricycles to the disabled giving them the freedom to work, attend school, and care for themselves”, said  James Benshoof, President of Hopkins Rotary.

This project, in its second year, came about with a request from the Rotary Club of Kothagudem, India where many victims of polio or accidents in the nearby mining area abound.

A small team from Minnesota attended the distribution ceremony of the previous year’s Adult Wheelchair Tricycles in the fall of 2008.

Rotary District 5950 Governor Chris Holm led the delegation. “I talked with the tricycle recipients. One man said to me, ‘Thank you. I am no longer a burden on my family. With this tricycle I can now go to the University at night myself and get an education. I can be self-sufficient and help my family and others.’ “This was the most moving event I have ever been to in my Rotary career” said Holm.
